2020 Wheelchair Rugby Invitational & 2020 IWRF Paralympic Qualification Event
The Wheelchair Rugby Vancouver Invitational is returning to the Richmond Olympic Oval, March 2 – 8. In conjunction with the annual Vancouver Invitational, BC Wheelchair Sports will host the 2020 IWRF Paralympic Qualification Event for the Tokyo .
The Vancouver Invitational is one of the most exciting tournaments on the West Coast and has been a longstanding pillar for wheelchair rugby in the Pacific Northwest. For fans, it’s one of the few opportunities to see some of the best quad athletes in the world play the fast paced sport poetically named Murderball. For some players, it’s an opportunity to compete and train among the best in the world. For veterans, it’s training ground for the World Championships and the Olympics.
This is the first IWRF Qualification event that Canada has hosted, and the tournament is the final opportunity for teams to qualify for the wheelchair rugby competition at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. The top two finishers will join Australia, the United States, Japan, Great Britain, Denmark and New Zealand in Tokyo. Host Canada will be joined by five teams selected from the 2019 IWRF Zone Championship and two countries from the IWRF World Ranking List. Invitations have been sent to Brazil, Colombia, France, Germany, Korea, Sweden, and Thailand.
