The Richmond Olympic Oval and the City of Richmond in partnership with the Canadian Fencing Federation (CFF) are excited to announce the 2013 World Grand Prix Fencing Championship will be hosted at the Oval from March 23 – 24, 2013.
“The City of Richmond looks forward to welcoming the best international fencers in the world to the Richmond Olympic Oval,” says Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “This is a great opportunity to further develop fencing in BC and Canada and inspire new generations of local youth to take up the sport and become champions in the future. The athletes can look forward to competing in an outstanding venue for sport and a community that is committed to being a great sport host.”
The tournament will attract approximately 125 of the world’s best men’s epee fencers and will be hosted by the British Columbia Fencing Association in conjunction with Richmond’s own Dynamo Fencing Club, which is a major partner of the provincial association.
“The CFF is thrilled to bring this Grand Prix event to the Richmond Olympic Oval,” says CFF President, Brad Goldie. “The BC organizing committee staged a highly successful Canada Cup event here in November with over 750 participants. The event was an overwhelming success and we have no doubt that they will stage a first class Grand Prix event. We are very excited about showing the world this great venue and showcasing such high level fencing in BC.”
It is anticipated the number of competitors, coaches, officials and families expected to attend the tournament will result in a solid contribution to the City’s economic development goals.
